Pymble welcomes the Masai to Pymble

Friday 11 October, 2013

Pymble was delighted to welcome two visitors from the School of St Jude in Tanzania to our assemblies today. Students from Year 1 to Year 11 were entertained by Felix Follel, a Masai man, and Kim Saville, St Jude’s Deputy Director. Felix, adorned in traditional Masai costume brought greetings from St Jude’s which is the school attended by two Tanzanian girls sponsored by Pymble students; Vivian and Queen.

It was appropriate to celebrate the educational opportunities afforded by the School of St Jude’s in the same week as the International Day of the Girl Child. St Jude’s was founded by Gemma Sissia, an Australian woman originally from Armidale and educated at St Vincent’s College in Potts Point.

Felix explained that the selection criteria for students at St Jude’s are academic ability and extreme poverty. He spoke of how there are over a thousand students who sit the academic test each week at St Jude’s in hope of securing one of the 100 places for the following school year.
