Celebrating our finest sportswomen

Every year in November, the College hosts the Pymble Sportswomen’s Awards Night to recognise students in Years 7 to 12 for their outstanding performances and their contribution and commitment to Pymble Sport.

In 2018, more than 120 students received awards including Athlete of the Year, All-rounder of the Year and the Strive for the Highest Award in a sporting discipline. The evening also recognised students from Representative teams and those who represented Australia in sport.

Master of Ceremony for the evening was our accomplished ex-student, journalist, author and TV and radio presenter, Melissa Doyle AM (1987).

The guest speaker was Layne Beachley AO, seven-time World Champion Surfer and the Founder and Director of her own charity, the Layne Beachley Foundation, Aim for the Stars, which, like Pymble, aims to empower young girls and women to fulfil their potential and to give back to the community that supported them on their journey.

The highest accolade of the evening, Sportsgirl of the Year 2018 was awarded to Year 12 student Sofia Metaxouli, whose accomplishments include:

• Australian U19 Ladies’ Indoor Netball Team (3rd year in a row)
  • World Series 6s Competition – Runners up
  • World Series 7s Competition – 3rd Place
• NSW Waratah U19 Ladies’ Indoor Netball Team.
• Pymble Senior Firsts Netball team (undefeated IGSSA Champions).
• Pymble Senior Firsts AFL team (undefeated AFL NSW Independent Girls School Competition Champions).

Year 12 student and Swimming Captain, Eloise Riley, was also acknowledged for receiving the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin Award 2018 earlier this year. Awarded by the Australian Olympic Committee, the Pierre de Coubertin award recognises secondary school students who demonstrate values which are consistent with the Olympic Movement through participation in sport.

“Our annual Sportswomen’s Awards Night is a celebration of our most passionate and accomplished athletes at Pymble; the girls and young women who have shown utmost dedication, outstanding attitudes and exceptional skills in their chosen sport or sports,” said Acting Principal, Mrs Julie Shaw.

“We congratulate our 2018 awards recipients for consistently upholding the College values and for striving for the highest in training, in friendly matches and in the thick of fierce competition. We are incredibly proud of the many accomplishments of our athletes in scarlet, navy and white,” Mrs Shaw said.

Congratulations and well done to all award winners and to all Pymble students, who have represented the College this year and contributed to Pymble Sport.
