Bee Hotels in the Agriculture Plot
Monday 23 September, 2019
In 2018, two Year 9 students, Sydney Auld and Kyana Cvetkovic, learnt about the plight of bees and consequently applied for an Environmental Grant through the Ku-ring-gai Council to build two bee hotels. On 27 November 2018, Kyana and Sydney attended the Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers to receive a cheque for $400 from Mayor Jennifer Anderson.
The bee hotels were designed using the graphic-driven software, Illustrator, and built using the laser cutter on the school campus (with the assistance of Mr Ellis and Mr Frohlich). They were then filled with dried bamboo – all the great things that native bees like to nest in. Once completed, the girls then placed the bee hotels in the Agriculture Plot with the two resident ducks, Beast and Beauty.
The remaining funds were used to purchase and plant native flowering plants for the bees to feed on all year round.
