Technology and Applied Studies

Pymble’s Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) program provides students with the skills, knowledge and interest to successfully work and respond within a rapidly changing world. Areas of study within TAS include Technology, Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Textiles and Design and Hospitality. Dressmaking and woodwork are offered as co-curricular courses. Our students benefit from a range of outstanding specialist TAS facilities, including a commercial-standard kitchen.

Technology

The development of reflective, flexible and creative thinking skills is central to the Year 7 and 8 mandatory Technology course. Students are encouraged to develop skills in enterprise and initiative by working through design challenges using a range of technologies. Workshop facilities and specially trained staff support students in working with a range of materials including wood and plastics, while access to the latest information technologies assists students in making their designs a reality.

Food Technology

Food Technology is an elective subject in Years 9 through to 12. Pymble has specialist teachers and facilities to provide the ideal setting for learning about a range of issues related to food. Issues including hygiene and safety, the nutritional quality of food, access to a regular food supply and the environmental impact of food production processes are examined as part of the course. Students explore food-related issues through a range of practical experiences, allowing them to make informed and appropriate choices with regards to food.

Hospitality

This is a course for students in Years 11 and 12 who wish to work in the hospitality industry, either as a long-term career or in a part-time or temporary capacity. Delivered in Pymble’s industry standard, commercial kitchen, Hospitality (240 indicative hours) course provides a pathway to the qualification of SIT20416 Certificate ll in Kitchen Operations  as well as a Higher School Certificate mark which may count towards the ATAR. Unique access to accredited staff and industry professionals, through the Visiting Chef Program, provides students with inspirational opportunities that are highly relevant to a career in the hospitality industry.

Textiles Technology and Textiles and Design

Textiles Technology in Year 9 and 10 and Textiles and Design in Years 11 and 12 are elective subjects in which students are challenged to work creatively within the field of textiles. Facilities include three well-equipped classrooms with access to the latest technologies in fabric and garment production. Specialist teachers work with students on a range of themed projects to develop skill and knowledge of textiles applications. Student creativity is celebrated in the annual Fashion Week including Textiles on Parade and the Exhibition of Major Textiles Projects.
